Fun Nonprofit Things!

The Mission

So today is my first attempt at doing my own taxes for a nonprofit. We've not raised a ton of money in 2022, so it should be pretty simple. I say that knowing that it's going to bite me directly in the butt now that I've said it. Either way the first thing I decided to do was go ahead and read the Annual Filing and Forms documentation on the IRS website. After a fun little reading there, I went ahead and read the Annual Electronic Filing Requirement for Small Exempt Organizations documentation as well. So much fun I could just die of excitement. It reads like a Physics textbook and makes about as much sense as any other document our government has ever produced. 😅

Having read all of that and still not completely understanding what I need, I started to form a list. Keep in mind that this is specifically for a nonprofit operating on a shoestring budget of somewhere in the neighborhood of $1,000 in cash donations and $4,000 in non-cash donations for the entire year. So our gross receipts are well under the current (2023) number of $50,000 per year - so we can fill out Form 990-N or we can opt for Form 990 or Form 990-EZ since we satisfy the conditions of all three.

The List

I entered all of our info into the forms that asked for it. Now that the filing has been created I'm not quite sure what happens. I'll have to wait and see if they request more information or not, because that seemed way too simple for it to be the whole thing. There will be updates to this, I'm sure of it.
